Research on evolution is the foundation of biology. Because of the declining costs of DNA sequencing, and emerging tools to analyze large genomic data sets, we're now able to answer scientific questions we weren't able to in the past.

About This Grant

Now that the costs of sequencing genes and genomes have dropped considerably, we have more genomic data than ever and can answer broader scientific questions about the evolution of organisms.

We're seeking proposals from researchers working on well-defined research questions related to evolution, both in broad and narrow questions, from adaptive radiations to the fine-tuned engineering of bacteria to develop unique functions. You could be sequencing the genome of a species for the first time, putting together the phylogenetic tree of a specific family, using morphological studies to track development of appendages or characteristics, or uncovering the history through fossils in the fossil record. Any project working on some aspect of evolution is welcome to join.

How It Works

This grant is for projects that launch crowdfunding campaigns by January 4, 2017. The project with the most backers will receive an additional $500 grant. Eligible projects must be approved before the launch deadline.
